Pleased to see that SVBKVLT have pressed up the second album from Shanghai-based artist Wu Shanmin aka 33EMYBW on vinyl. For the uninitiated, it may be interesting to know that her music received the esteemed Aphex Twin seal of approval when she played a show he curated in Manchester. It’s not difficult to hear why her music and indeed her aesthetic would appeal to Aphex - she’s certainly out there on her own.

Essentially this is ultra-modern, fairly hyper dance music, but you won’t catch me busting moves to this at my local discotech because not only am I a TERRIBLE dancer well beyond my prime and would bring shame on my family, but I simply do not have the required amount of arms and legs with which to throw shapes. This is music for a rave rammed with insects, myriapods, crustaceans and arachnids - little invertebrate animals with exoskeletons, paired jointed appendages and segmented bodies gyrating to the frantic sound of mutant technoid footwork and the sort of unhinged polyrhythms a mere pair of legs simply can’t handle. It’s a pretty joyous selection of tunes - a vibrant, colourful carnival of electronic sound and twisted percussion. I feel like I'm deep inside an illegal rave in an insect colony and Jlin is on the wheels of steel, except she's mutated into an eight-legged freak.
