Nathaniel Young is busy. Not only does he run the Severed Mercies and Blankstairs art platforms but he records as Hofmann, Kohl, Moral Extrication and richard_p. Now as Guilt Attendant he has produced an album of hard late '90s style techno which uses the medium to explore his religious upbringing. Blustery ritualistic racket for hardened techno heads.

Suburban Scum is the handy work of NYC dwelling Nathaniel Young aka Hofmann, Kohl, Moral Extrication. His gloomy, greyscale American Gothic techno productions as Guilt Attendant feel right at home on Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions. It’s the sort of techno that dancers primarily clad in black and leather like to get down to and is compatible with Ancient Methods, OAKE, Sandwell District etc.
The album bangs from the opening cut ‘Broken (Free)’ complete with its pitched down vocal sample. I’ve always enjoyed these little vocal samples while on the dancefloor. You can never decipher them and so they feel like some sort of subliminal message or mind control. This is a theme which runs through the album - Young had a Christian upbringing and he’s scattered samples of his preacher throughout which gives this album a quality both profound and sinister. Young uses techno as a vehicle to break away from the chains of Christianity and as a tool for opening the mind to possibilities beyond the strict parameters of religion. Basically, this is music to get mashed to and dance all night on a dark sweaty, smoky dancefloor.
I reckon my standout cut is the spacey ‘Self-Sacrifice Doctrine’ which has something of a New York techno sound - think Damon Wild, Synewave, Joey Beltram, Function. At sixteen minutes it’s a pretty useful track if you’re a DJ and you need to go pee.
