Teenage Birdsong by Four Tet

'Teenage Birdsong' by Four Tet was recorded during the sessions for his 'New Energy' album, but never made it onto the record. The song, which is a fairly typical Four Tet cut i.e. great, has since become a bit of a streaming success. Here it is, on its own 12” along with Avalon Emerson and Overmono (Truss & Tessela) remixes, plus an extra track 'Dreamer'. Limited copies on Kieren Hebden's own Text imprint.

Teenage Birdsong by Four Tet

7/10 Will 10 December 2019

Four Tet's released a couple of the tracks that didn't quite fit into 2017's masterpiece 'New Energy' along with some superb remixes onto a 12" single called 'Teenage Birdsong'. The title track in question is Klassic Kieran Hebden, all organic textures fused with burbling synths and simple chord progressions. It has the feel of something that didn't quite make it on to the 'Lost in Translation' soundtrack. There's this profound sense of melancholic calm - lovely. The remixes amp up the energy a little, especially the Overmono one which hints at trance and rave but never quite gets there.

The final track is another Four Tet original called 'Dreamer' which has muted percussive melodies and percussion that's gentle, yet invitingly noticeable, but never ignorable, just gently thumping in the background, which is maybe a good way to describe Four Tet himself.
