Though they had long established themselves, it was only when they released ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’ that idiots like me started paying attention to the remarkable Sons Of Kemet. And that meant us idiots also started paying attention to all of the wonderful sounds coming out of our fair capital’s jazz scene. Recently ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’ has been joined by breakthrough albums from the likes of Nérija and Joe Armon-Jones, and now the long awaited debut from drumming savant Moses Boyd.

Much like the work of Chicago’s Makaya McCraven, ‘Dark Matter’ is more than a jazz album lead from the riser. Boyd is every much the producer McCraven is, but with his own palette. Where McCraven’s beats draw on hip-hop, Boyd finds inspiration in London’s club scene, where McCraven plays Latin rhythms, Boyd reaches for afrobeat. And more than anything, it’s these beats that draw the album together. They’re confident and fidgety, precise in a way that brings to mind drum ‘n’ bass and jungle.

The rest of these tracks are wonderful too. ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ features what sounds like a tuba trying to sound like synthesised bass, or maybe the other way round? Half way through ‘Y.O.Y.O’ are searing hot guitar solo is moved out the way by a start and skeletal one, magnifying its potency. And ‘Only You’ is built around a sample that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Burial track. You get the feeling that Boyd can probably do anything he sets his mind to.
