Texan art-rock icons ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead end their five-year silence with their tenth studio album. Grandiosely titled X: The Godless Void and Other Stories, sees the band sounding as fresh as they ever did, delicately balancing swirling, dream-pop noise with widescreen songcraft.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (hereafter referred to as T.o.D) have a new album out called 'X: The Godless Void and Other Stories' (hereafter referred to as 'X'). 'X' has the feel of a classic Americana/alt-rock record. It's energetic and, at times, raw and uncompromising. I'm reminded of alt-rock doyens R.E.M. and Grant Lee Buffalo.

It's a very dense record, with dynamic arrangements and sweeping, grand textures. There's a cinematic feel to it, T.o.D take their sweet time and conjure images of vistas in the Chihuahuan Desert. Occasionally 'X' feels a bit overblown, with lyrics about "space-time" and "dissolving into impermanence" and what not, though I quite enjoy that. Life's too short to want every group to sound like Sleaford Mods. There are digital piano arpeggios, shoegaze guitars, different language samples, proggy crescendos, song titles like 'Blade of Wind' and 'Who Haunts The Haunter?' - what's not to love? Well, maybe some stuff, but if you like bands like Rush and Tangerine Dream then you should find something in here.
