Dead Air by Marconi Union

Past collaborators with likes of Jah Wobble and Max Richter, Manchester’s Marconi Union have enjoyed a long and fruitful career since forming almost two decades ago. For their tenth album, the trio have dispensed with beats and guest spots, opting for a more impressionistic sound on the beautiful Dead Air.

Stunning album, one of those rare pieces of work that just get better and better upon repeated listens. This is something that Marconi Union seem to specialize in as several of their previous works have elicited the same response.

Tracks at first appear quite basic but slowly the different layers and textures are revealed showing complexity and at the same time simplicity. That is a rare talent. Best listened to in headphone mode in a quiet place although it also makes an interesting soundtrack to urban travels.

It has been said Marconi's works seem to go above most peoples heads. I kind of have to agree as there seems to be no other explanation as to why they are not much more widely known or playing sell out shows at the Royal Albert Hall.
