Tough Love by Erin Anne

7/10 Will 10 December 2019

It's weird how life can imitate art. For a few weeks, I've been thinking about fasting and today I started. A few hours in, I started reviewing Erin Anne's new record and came across the song title 'Sleep for Dinner' and the lyric "save some money if I don't eat" (this isn't the reason I'm doing it, dw readers). Anyway, it's usually a pretty good record that already seems to have wrapped tendrils around your day.

'Tough Love' is Anne's debut LP. It's short, sharp, and full of vim and vigour. Although it's a fun-sounding record, there's a level of misanthropy and anxiety in the ironic distance between the bright, sunny music and the lyrics, which veer from piss and vinegar misanthropy ("I wish you the worst, man") to anxious neediness ("I'll find her if it kills me"). If this album can be summed up in one noise, it's the sarcastic, faux-excited whoops that follow some of Anne's most bitings lyrics. It's a noise that seems to convey both the album's ironic undertones as well as a slightly nihilistic sense of enjoyment.

The arrangements tend toward the pedestrian which serves to accentuate both Anne's songwriting and the occasional blast of something a little bit weirder. Take, for instance, the brilliantly noisy, quavery keyboard melodies on 'Bedroom Track (Carrie)' and 'Gaslighter'. 'Gaslighter' is one of the album's best songs, and has a beautifully cacophanous outro. Weird synthy bits also pepper the album; I would like more of them. Unfortunately, in places the songs themselves become a little pedestrian, but for the most part 'Tough Love' is a record that does more than just hint at a dynamic and interesting artistic sensibility.
