Just as the Autumn nights draw in, Jim O'Rourke's epic 4CD set of deeply immersive, crepuscular sound for Sonoris has arrived with impeccable timing. This is music to laze around to, music to get lost inside and make the world go away. Here he applies his Midas touch to create soundscapes that seemingly constantly morph - there is a stillness and serene vibe to this music and yet it's constantly moving with a gentle liquid-like flow. His use of field recordings and indeed the artwork, for me at least paint a picture of pastoral Japanese landscapes, rivers and mountains. No surprise as he's lived in Japan for many years now, and whether intentional or not, the place seems to have been somehow absorbed into this music. To call it "ambient" music doesn't feel quite right somehow, but let's just call it his unique vision of ambient music - created in a similar mode to his Japanese CD release 'Sleep Like It's Winter'.
Such beautiful, absorbing, immersive sound. A ray of sunshine with plenty of potential for long (4 hours +), repeated chill sessions. Highly recommended.
