Here’s a cassette tape, a very long cassette tape appropriately enough, featuring some very bendy shapes, long shadows and elongated noises amongst its astonishingly wide palette. It’s quite an armoury to have at your disposal, is this selection of mind-warping sounds, and Renick Bell (for it is he at the controls) makes the best of a pretty decent situation.

The US live-coder Bell got together with Steph Horak (manipulated vocals and effects pedals) for two live takes, recorded 3 years ago in Bristol and reproduced on this here lo-fi tape. The deliciously abrasive, popping and searing sounds in this peaking set are the pleasing result. Scapes, swipes and zooms all peek through the lurking atmosphere.

This is some deceptively structured business, yet free-flowing madness, and performed in a way I don’t pretend to understand (Loz would’ve been able to say, RIP). There are 45+ minutes of this thing and a remix each by the duo on the flip side. Insane, mate.
