Techno done properly will be immersive and full of subtle shifts in sound and mood and this is what Rory St John is aiming towards with his latest release on Voitax. The result is a subtle and introspective take on dub techno with a deep soulful sound at odds perhaps with his earlier more abrasive work. Another string to his production bow, it is full of precise touches that reveal themselves on repeated listens.

Rory St John returns to Berlin’s excellent VOITAX following his 2017 ‘Run Your Mouth’ white label EP for the imprint. ‘Excommunication’ is a solid and varied four-tracker, opening with the booming, DEEP dubwise techno of ‘Castle’ which brings the classic more pounding Basic Channel dub techno blueprint bangin’ into 2019 and beyond. It’s pure dancefloor hypnosis and the sort of track you feel as though you can swim around inside. The superb ‘Commune’ tunnels into darker terrain with a peculiar stepping groove, flickering percussion and bassline that’s like a skanking Godzilla. ‘Chapel’ bubbles with an acidic tang, as it develops, transient melodies emerge and hover. The trippy spaced out final cut ‘Dream Sequence’ thumps and BANGS but there’s no brutal hard as nails aggression here - the core functional elements are all optimized to have heavy impact on the ‘floor, but as with all these tracks, it’s immaculately produced and full of subtle intricate spectral sounds that float around and linger making for an introspective journey that’ll be perfectly complemented by plenty of dry ice fog and a strobe machine at 4:00 am.
