Information by Galcher Lustwerk

New York producer and DJ Galcher Lustwerk releases his first album for Ghostly International. Ever since his first mixtapes over five years ago, Galcher has worked a consistent line in after-hours electronica. Information adds more live percussion to the mix, as well as smatterings of jazz, but his soulful, abstract musings are still present.

Galcher Lustwerk’s genius is to couch introspection and anxiety within deep-house instrumentals - traditionally one of popular music’s less angsty styles. Following a woozy, scene-setting opener ‘Information’, Lustwerk’s third LP and first for Ghostly International, moves outward with a trio of tracks like this. ‘I See A Dime’, ‘Another Story’ and ‘Overpay, Overstay’ might lilt with the crisp insouciance of Moodymann, but it is in repose that Lustwerk’s thoughts become fraught. Money is on his mind, New York is killing him and he needs to smoke up to drown it all out.

There’s a little of the Dean Blunts to this record, though Lustwerk doesn’t deal in rupture in the same manner that Blunt does. Rather, the way Lustwerk employs juxtaposition and a sort of wry re-appraisal of common phrases here ushers some of the tracks into a similarly freighted space. Though it probably wouldn’t end up as a Theo Parrish-esque club joint, you could easily imagine Blunt calling a cut ‘Fathomless Irie’ and plumbing it with keening keys and mumbled vocals hung just out of reach.

‘Information’ is a record that is never settled, seeking out the solace of tranquil music but only finding itself haunted by the demands of a world gone mad. And Lustwerk’s certainly not the only person feeling the pressure in 2019.
