Shorelights is the work of ambient techno's best Rod (Modell) of Deepchord, Echospace etc. and others alongside Walter Wasacz. We should be grateful for every morsel Modell throws at us (and there are many) as he is the master of deeply immersive and beautifully melancholic long form techno. Expect beautiful shimmering landscapes that will make your heart skip a beat.

- Bioluminescence by Shorelights
Bioluminescence is a form of chemiluminescence which involves living organisms such as types of fungi, microorganisms like bacteria, and fireflies producing and emitting light. It occurs a lot in the ocean in marine vertebrates and invertebrates - you've most likely seen jellyfish and deep-sea creatures glowing, right? Recently my sister was on a mission to see it happening in the sea and so we went to the beach late at night together with my dad. It had been a hot day and the tide was high - apparently optimum conditions for the microorganisms to do their thing. I never thought in a million years we'd actually see a thing, but there it was - as the waves were gently breaking, and we splashed, the water glistened with an incredible electric blue neon light and it was unreal - one of the most magical things I have ever seen. It was like some sort of CGI or augmented reality had taken over my vision - a profound and moving experience. Trying to articulate the sheer beauty and magic isn't easy - but if you close your eyes and give this record a spin you can almost go there (nothing beats the real thing).
For the uninitiated, Shorelights is Rod Modell (Deepchord, cv313, echospace [detroit] etc.) and Walter Wasacz. Christopher McNamara contributed to previous works but isn’t present on this one. The record is comprised of two sparkling side-long tracks, both clocking in at just over nineteen minutes. Basically, both are highly evocative of this natural phenomenon after which the record is named. Two gorgeous, radiant, glistening iridescent ambient works that delicately ripple and shimmer, triggering a synesthesia effect - behind the eyelids I can see the lights. For me these gently fizzing and dissolving, very tactile aquatic sounds and the experience of witnessing Bioluminescence have become entwined and practically inseparable. It’s difficult not to romanticise and become mushily sentimental about the whole thing, but as I listen to the enchanting, pure analogue magic it takes me right back to the shore and triggers precious memories I’ll treasure for as long as I walk this earth. Weep.
