There is probably no better year than 2019 for Negativland to re-appear. The group have become infamous over the years for their agit prop stunts including most notably waging war on U2. Here in the year where reality is becoming ever more blurred they ask what is true and what is false by way of a collage of samples of everything from Fox News hosts to ecoterrorists to early Negativland live tapes. Perfectly apt for our times.

My first encounters with Negativland back in the1980s left me utterly confused since I’d never heard anything remotely like their music, featuring as it did a cornucopia of samples stitched into a framework that seemed oblivious to the groove.
Indeed even the term music seemed to be stretching a point. The primitive level of technology available back in the day made their achievements impressive even if on occasion baffling. 'True False' features all the members of the group, although three are sadly no longer with us. It’s a brilliant piece of work but made accessible by the fact that the real world has now caught up with Negativland’s dystopian vision. Fake news, social media and daytime TV are a rich source of content and make you wonder where they even found the samples for 1980’s self-titled debut.
It’s a very telling observation on modern life that this album sounds perfectly normal and the words seem everyday in their extremity. Negativland truly were 40 years ahead of their time but their work now appears relevant and necessary in ways that no one would have wished to imagine in the previous century. 'True False' is a stunning commentary on this precarious moment and as vital, thought provoking and damn entertaining an album as you are likely to hear in this or any other year.
