After the first instalment was so warmly greeted back in 2017, Iona Fortune presents the sequel to her Tao of I album, with a planned series of eight to eventually be delivered. Volume 2 picks up where the first left off, using the hexagrams of the I Ching as inspiration for her synthetic, bass-driven explorations.

Tao Of I Volume 2 by Iona Fortune

Iona Fortune’s music is soooo mesmerizing, isn’t it? I got to hear her playing live supporting Shellac a wee while ago. Through a big system, her deep sub-bass seemed to penetrate right into the bone marrow, and her deeply stirring, tranquil sounds made me want to curl up on the deck amongst the discarded plastic pint pots, locked in the fetal position and ZONE while a load of ageing, follically challenged Big Black fans with wibbling beer bellies trampled me to death. Then her transcendent sounds could escort my fragile soul back into the Bardo realm.

If it wasn’t glaringly apparent from the record’s title, this is the second volume of a planned epic series of eight (whoa!) albums exploring hexagrams of ancient Chinese text the ‘I Ching’. Optimo Music kicked things off releasing the first volume, and now the follow up comes via Alessio Natalizia’s Ecstatic label. The energy that seems to flow through the eight tracks is sublime and just pulls you into this really lush meditative realm - a cocoon from the outside world, a place perfect for contemplation. Although stylistically/sonically different, it’s evocative of the sort of virtual environment created by Catherine Christer Hennix’s ‘The Electric Harpsichord’. The sound palette is magical with the traditional Chinese strings and subtle electronics working in perfect harmony creating moments of pure beauty - ‘Tong Ren 同人’ is particularly gorgeous as are the hypnotic chimes of ‘Da You 大有’. Lush, mind cleansing music.
