Cold In Berlin mix fuzzy, goth-flavoured detuned doom rock with post punk. They're based in London, so I have no idea if they know what the temperature is in Berlin. They claim to be influenced by music released in the 20 year period between 1973 and 1993 along with things outside music such as Asian extreme films, early 20th century European literature, the work of documentary maker Adam Curtis. This all pours into their latest slab of wax, Rituals Of Surrender.

Rituals Of Surrender by Cold In Berlin

6/10 Will 10 October 2019

Cold In Berlin's fourth album 'Rituals Of Surrender' sounds exactly like you would imagine an album called 'Rituals Of Surrender' sounds like. It's doomy, gothy, and completely monochrome. If you're into hanging around abbeys and own black candles then Cold In Berlin are a group for you.

Singer Maya Berlin hollers stridently about 'candles', 'poison', a 'sad ending', and a body that is like 'church'. I like the way the vocals sit astride the powerful arrangements. They sit unmoveable and impassive while detuned guitars and sluggardly drums crash beneath. When this band strip it back and slow it down they sound great. When they channel Sleep and Electric Wizard on songs like 'Temples' and 'Shadowman' the album really comes to life.

There are a few moments where 'Rituals of Surrender' feels a little overblown (see album title) but this is redeemed by the pedigree of the riffage and its sweetly apocalyptic atmosphere.
