ATØ by Ziúr

One of the great products of the Berlin club scene over the last few years, Ziúr follows up her 2017 debut album U Feel Anything? with sophomore effort ATØ. This time around, she’s operating with a much larger arsenal of sounds and influences, and dedicates the new record to “all survivors, outcasts and weirdos”.

Oh, that’s cool. Planet Mu are bringing us this shiny new compact disc (and vinyl LP) by Berlin banger-merchant Ziúr. ‘ATØ’ is the sophomore follow-up to the very good ‘U Feel Anything?’ Maximal, corruscating and visceral music aimed at the body, gracefully; with percolating details to feed your head too.

What I love about the opening, titular track is the way it infuses and interpolates what sounds like organic voices, birds twittering and so on, yet on closer inspection it’s clearly completely synthetic. It’s all weaved together perfectly to reveal the spaces inside so you can have a little peek within. A bit like a shredded wheat.

‘It’s Complicated’ is a skeletal, metallic noise with exquisite programmed rhythms and really futuristic bleeps. Like robots and computers pretending to go to war, it’s lots o’ fun for everyone. Her voice appears many times, and here’s ‘I Vanish’ -- a mechanistic marvel. I’m being seduced by these machines. Resistance is futile, you know.
