David Kilgour, as well as being a member of New Zealand's magnificent post-punk crew the Clean, has also had a long and storied solo career. Bobbie's a Girl is his latest offering and eschews the noisy garagey sound of his youth for a more gentle and pastoral work that recalls some of his favourite '60s musicians such as the Byrds and the Velvet Underground. Expect warm, understated psychedelia and laid back jangle.

Bobbie's A Girl by David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights

6/10 Will 19 September 2019

Recently I've been trudging through the knotty and angsty parts (most of it, then) of James Joyce's 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' so I felt in need of something winsome and direct. Thankfully these are all qualities I attribute to David Kilgour and The Heavy Eight's new album 'Bobbie's A Girl'. It's basically an indie-folk/country rock record with plenty of hushed vocals, emphasis on clean finger-picked guitar lines, and the soft pattering of brushes on drums. This isn't purely a heritage album, though. 'Crawler' has some glistening synths just bubbling around its edges, 'Swan Loop' has the distant creaks and squeals of squalling amplifier feedback, and closer 'Ngapara' is a little like Neu! tinkering around with a more earthy direction.

'Bobbie's A Girl' is sadboi country in the vein of Grant Lee Buffalo. It's country that's mournfully anthemic with minor chord progressions that have tender resolutions. As the night draws in and you are in need of a comfortingly mournful record to stick on, you might reach for 'Bobbie's A Girl'. Summer's over, mate, just accept it.
