Two Hands by Big Thief

"I have two hands" - the words of synth wizard Viv Savage. Big Thief are the latest band to do that 'record two albums at the same time' thing  - see also Beach House. So if you bought this years U.F.O.F and are still enjoying it then you can move seemlessly into its sister album. Basically it seems where U.F.O.F was wet then Two Hands is dry both in the weather conditions at recording time and in the sound produced. Here the songs were recorded live with few overdubs as the band showcased their latest batch of songs with a no frills, bone dry approach.

The cover of Big Thief's new album 'Two Hands' has the feel of a charming family photo that didn't quite make it to the wall, fireplace, or wherever your fam keeps their photos. It feels like it's taken on a whim, with some members looking off-camera and only traces of smile playing around their lips. The cover is an accurate reflection of the sound of the album, which was recorded in mostly single takes with members setting up instruments as close as possible to each other.

'Two Hands' is sweetly melancholic, with the kind of bone-dry production that is deceptively hard to achieve. Singer Adrianne Lenker has a lovely Southern-accented croon. I love the way her voice can just trail off slowly and all you seem to be hearing is the faint sound of breath exhalation. Superb. The record is almost unsettlingly intimate. It feels like I'm sitting in the center of Big Thief's El Paso studio after a long day of picking pecans in dungarees (I'm not being whacky, there's a pecan orchard nearby).

It's refreshing to hear an album that's frank and direct. Not that overdubs and studio magic are less honest, 'Two Hands' is simply a great record delivered in a style that fits its content.
