Arriving some sixteen or so months since Burial and the Bug’s first collaboration as Flame 1 graced our turntable, they return as Flame 2 and invite us to skank inside their haunted dancehall once again. We live in such an instant culture that a wee bit of deferred gratification is always tantalizing around these parts, and for sure, this hefty plate has been well worth the wait.

Up top, we get ‘Dive’ which has a granular texture somewhere between William Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops’ and Porter Ricks' ‘Nautical Dub’. The immense sub-bass has a restrained gnarly quality which hits the solar plexus right in the sweet spot as it creeps along, then hits again with rattle snake-like metallic percussion uncoiling and shimmering through the murk. The overall feel is like coming out of a storm on the other side. The thunder has moved along, still echoing in the distance and the carnage appears through the fog like a mirage. All the while there’s an unsettling sense of loneliness and desolation - as though we were the last human on earth. This one is a proper heavyweight, gloomy dub mutant laced with Burial’s hallmark spine-tingling emotional impact.

Underneath we get the gargantuan growling stepper that is ‘Rain’ with it's stomping percussion sounding like a charge of menacing armour-plated, stoned rhinos. It goes without saying that the low end on this beauty is on point - a pure sonic body massage. The scale of the thing is ridiculous - it’s freakin’ huge. The tectonic plate shifting rumble got me feeling like I’m on a stakeout with a crew of dinosaurs hunting for prey in the middle of a monsoon. This one will nice up/terrify the dance in equal measure.

Both tracks are tweaked for maximum impact and come highly recommended.
