- Resonant Body by Octo Octa
I suppose the highest praise I can give ‘Resonant Body’ by Octo Octa is that I’d very happily hear any of these tracks in a mix. And I mean any of them. Even the weird new-agey ‘My Body Is Powerful’ which uses what must be one of the most overused bird call samples in the history of music. Even the 120BPM warm-up slot disco of ‘Power To The People’. Neither of these are things I’d normally go in for, but in Octo Octa’s hands, they thrill.
This is partly down to what fills the rest of the album. For the most part ‘Resonant Body’ is an album of high BPM kinetic bangers that all sound like some forgotten white label classic. The drum break that forms the backbone of ‘Ecstatic Beat’ is utterly mesmeric in its wonkiness, and paired with strategically placed synth blasts makes for a thrilling ride.
‘Move Your Body’ in particular has the air of the gem of a crate digging session. It’s hard for it not to given its central sample is someone yelling the title. And you will move your body once those sugary rave synth stabs hit. They are so potent that I've learnt you shouldn't type with your hands in the air the hard way.
In many ways ‘Resonant Body’ reminds me of the Prodigy’s earlier albums. Some bangers, some more vibey. But with a coherent enough vision to be listenable as an an album.
