Jazz pianist and composer Kiefer Shackelford delivers his third studio album, just a year after his last effort Happysad. On top of intensive touring and working with Anderson .Paak, it’s been a remarkably fertile time for Kiefer - Superbloom gathers up the tracks from recent EP Bridges along with seven newbies.

It’s time for another Kiefer album! Another whole album, just a year after his impressive 'Happysad', coming at us once more via the ever-reliable, ubiquitous even, Stones Throw. During that vast expanse of time Kiefer worked and toured with Anderson .Paak. There he is, Mr Shackelford, depicted on the front cover, standing and surveying a serene scene amidst bright yellow alpine flora. His music is every bit as pretty and sunny as this depiction -- chilled, jazzy and oh-so-smooth beats, not a snare out of place.
This is one neat and sophisticated record, for the heads *and* for a r a n g e of moods… all the way from lackadaisical, to… ahem, having a lie down in the daisies. No, honestly it’s fine and very very laid back. Grooves which reach that little bit further, stretch out that teensy bit more than your standard boom-bap / lo-fi beat hop. I love this guy’s lazy keys but love the bass bits even more. It’s ‘Superbloom’, it’s super-cute and it’s never superfluous. 13 tracks of mellifluousness, in fact. Could do with a .Paak verse or two though maybe.
