'Early Paintings' is a greatest hits compilation by Scottish singer-songwriter Immigrant taken from his six previous albums. This album is essentially folk but with a strong baroque music influence. I suppose you could call 'Early Paintings' lo-fi, but the thing that struck me is how intimate this record is. Immigrant seems to be murmuring the words right into your ears. It's great to hear his Scottish accent right at the fore of this album, too.

The arrangements on this record are skeletal and bare, and it's rare that you will hear more than two or three instruments per song. This is why the songs carry so much emotional weight. If the arrangements were more lavish then the essential fragility permeating the music would perhaps be lost.

One thing we love at Norman Records about Immigrant is the packaging his records come in and 'Early Paintings' is no different. The double CD comes with a hand-painted cover and signed insert in a gorgeous handmade box.

It's certainly possible to compare Immigrant to other folky artists like Sun Kil Moon, Simon & Garfunkel, or perhaps Nick Drake, but I think the fragility mixed with gentle optimism is Immigrant's own.
