It would be very disappointing if a band who called themselves Bananagun turned out to make music that wasn’t raucously fun. Fortunately this Melbourne lot make good on the promise of their name by turning out a trippy blend of old-school garage-rock, tropicalia and psych-rock that is full of pep. Both ‘Do Yeah’ and ‘Top Cat’ bring the sunshine on the Do Yeah 7”. Put the output of the Soundway and Castle Face labels in a blender and you might just end up with something like Do Yeah.

How important is it that the production on a throwback record sounds like the era it’s throwing back to? I think there’s a lot of fun to be had with rendering the psychedelic 60s and 70s using the technologies of today. Hell it might even be… trippy.
I ask only because on Bananagun’s charming new EP ‘Do Yeah’, they seem to go out of their way to capture not just the songwriting and instrumentation of the era, but also, its production. Just listen to that flute on ‘Crane In The Tiger’s Mouth’, I’m pretty sure my phone could make a clearer recording than whatever they’ve used. That said, they could have easily faked it, I don’t actually know how they recorded ‘Do Yeah’.
Whatever you think, yes, ‘Do Yeah’ does sound, for lack of a better word, authentic. The three tracks here are joyful little psych jams, so joyful in fact that it’s infectious. For all my cynicism this is music that brought a smile to my face. The aforementioned flute for example, has an almost DJ Detweiler quality, such is its shambolic charm. The title track has a gentle Afrobeat shuffle to it which is groovy and propulsive, and ‘Top’s guitars are afflicted by occasional whiff of cheesy flange. The best comparison I could make is to Khruangbin. If they had more of a sense of humour.
