Loves running labels, does old Lone. Not content with helming the Magicwire imprint alongside Gabriola, the one born Matt Cutler has started up Ancient Astronauts with a new EP of his own. Abraxas is another fine set of halcyon house from Lone, one that joins the dots between the old-skool acid/rave sounds of Cutler's more recent drops and the maximalism he dealt in back in the early 2010s.

Aceeeeeed!! Lone returns an EP full of acidic sounds, breakbeats, congas, DnB flavours, and 'empyrean breakdowns' (just looked up what that means, good word).
'Abraxas' (for that is what it is called) is constantly fluctuating between something quite chilled-out and something that threatens to turn into something heavier. It's always hovering on that line, which results in a great tension. For instance, 'Young Star Cluster' has a simple glockenspiel melody 'longside a repeated 303 bassline. The title track has dreamy synth pads with distant, distorted hi-hats trills. I kinda hate this word but I must say that this EP feels playful (ugh). It's fun and wholly enjoyable.
Abraxas is an EP that moves in a liminal space and sounds all the better for it.
