Though it might evoke images of crusties and hippies, Beautiful Freaks is an excellently compiled collection providing a snapshot into the first proper counter-cultural wave in mainstream society. "They're selling hippie wigs in Woolworths..." It's easy to forget that there was a time when the hippie movement was a genuine counter-culture, when the Grateful Dead weren't just a band your Dad listened to, and when bands with long hair and flares ruled the world. This compilation, titled 'Beautiful Freaks', goes some way to documenting the spirit of the 60s.
The compilation starts off with an introduction to one of the towering poems of the latter half of the 20th century, 'Howl' by Allen Ginsberg. It provides a funny, cynical way of starting off this marvellous collection of deep-cuts. I love the way "holy" is repeated to the point of incomprehension. It's a way of showing how ideas like freedom and inclusion became repeated to the point of being meaningless.
Perhaps this is just the case for the review copy we were sent, but there are no track divisions which only adds to the spacey vibe of the music. Stick on a joss stick and chill out!
'Beautiful Freaks' is a really great compilation showcasing the best and most righteous artists of the 60s such as the Incredible String Band, Yoko Ono, and the Fugs.
