In the eight years after indie/dance band Friendly Fires' album Pala, there was very little activity. Then suddenly they released a couple of singles and started playing live shows. The cat is now out of the bag and fans will be delighted to hear that album No.3, Inflorescent, is here. It was produced by the band and others including Disclosure

Inflorescent by Friendly Fires

There are two great songs on Friendly Fires' new album, two pretty good ones, and the rest range from bang average to irksome. Let's get the negativity out of the way first. Much of 'Inflorescent', their third record, is rooted in this bright, colourful blend of modern house and disco that seems to clog the airwaves at the moment. Chart-bothering brothers Disclosure produced some of this record which goes some way to suggesting why it sounds like this. I also dislike most of the vocals. The lyrics are pretty whiny, moaning about how "we've got history" and how it's "hurting". This kind of mentality almost died out in the 60s, mate, why are you trying to resuscitate it?!

It's not all bad, however, and I really like 'Lack Of Love' and 'Can't Wait Forever'. 'Lack Of Love' has a superb, chewy bassline and great vocal harmonies. 'Can't Wait Forever' has some great house-y piano parts. I also quite like 'Kiss and Rewind', despite myself. 'Run The Wild Flowers' is like the Ballet if they weren't as superb.

This is a record that suggests to me that there's a really good album hiding away somewhere in Friendly Fires. Here's to hoping they find it...
