Thom Yorke (of you know... Radiohead?) will not be releasing his third solo album via BitTorrent. Instead, us lowly so-called "record stores" get a chance to hawk his dirty work. Anima is a companion piece to a film made with auteur director (and regular collaborator) Paul Thomas Anderson. Expect fidgety electronics, haunting vocals, and anxieties of all varieties.

7/10 Daoud 15 July 2019

I am not exaggerating when I say ‘Anima’ by Thom Yorke sounds exactly like I expected ‘Anima’ by Thom Yorke to sound. When news first arrived that Mr. Yorke would be releasing an album I knew. I knew it would be all fidgety electronics, morose singing and bucketfuls (SKIPFULS!) of anxiety. I expect I’m not alone in this. Despite playing in one of the festival headliners most capable of surprising listeners, Yorke’s solo pursuits have never really tried to. He knows what he likes and he's gonna gives it to us.

Almost every beat on here sounds like it was made by someone who takes great care to stay up to date with electronic music. There’s ‘Not The News’ doing something a bit like footwork, ‘’Impossible Knots is like gentle jungle, and pretty much everything else sounds like it could be on Planet Mu or Rephlex. And they’re all pretty good versions of those things, without breaking much new ground beyond the addition of Yorke’s vocals.

The best moments, are the ones which break the mould Yorke has built for himself. The bass on ‘Traffic’ sounds like a bassoon (sadly, I don’t think it is) and works as a glue to hold the rest of the track together. ‘Last I Heard’ opens with the sort of synths that make ‘Everything In Its Last Place’ so listenable, and is joined by a spinning choir of Thom Yorkes. And ‘Dawn Chorus’ is a subtle and moving ballad about the feeling of going nowhere in modern life.

These are the sorts of things that I tend to like about Radiohead too. Another non-surprise then, no wonder they stand out.

Wow. Firstly the vinyl is flat, the pressing is pristine, the production is pure class & the content is sublime.

It is a cognitive and glitchy danceable affair with the beats, clicks and splutters spiralling around vocals that sometimes feel eerily right close to the ear, yet other times are bouncing off the walls or permeating into lost infinity of space. The bass and sub bass at times are supporting a colossal scaffolding beyond the laws of architecture. This is a pristine experience where the imagination of all the parts are bigger than their sum.
