Rose Dorn are a three-piece from LA who were raised on a diet of Elliott Smith. More recently labels such as Double Double Whammy and Orchid Tapes have been providing them with sounds to treasure. Those who enjoy the obscure end of ‘90s US melodic indie should check these guys out. Days You Were Leaving is their debut album.

Here’s a debut LP! Which is exciting enough in and of itself -- I know you, dear reader, and I are aligned in this. This particular debut's by Rose Dorn, and it's called 'Days You Were Leaving'.

Rose Dorn is not, as I first guessed, a country singer from Islington, but a three-piece outfit from -- of all places -- the famously sprawling metropolis that is known the world over as ‘L.A.’ Apparently these three guys were variously scattered along the San Fernando Valley but now they are together. And you know what, I’m glad they are. This is lush, expansive indie rock done right.

Opener ‘Big Thunder’ slowly ushers in their sound. A protracted and ominous intro complete with rainstorm sounds, elegiac guitar outlining beautifully-traced, romantic melodies and those sad, lonely ‘Mondays-at-5-am’ feels. The call of your own bed -- and staying in until at least 10 -- is strong. These three were brought up on a diet of Elliott Smith, and it shows. They may also owe collective debts to Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Kristin Hersh, Big Star and a few others besides. Their sound is elegantly mournful, suffused with widescreen big-city blues and existential doubt; yet there are moments of what just might cautiously be considered to be optimistic.

Nothing else about this record is tentative though; those indie kids done grown up. A surprisingly mature sound belies their teenage angst; rain-clouds are permeated by shafts of morning light. The warmth radiated by the reassuringly jangly guitar is palpable on ‘Shaking’. More sad vocals. Boy is a bit sad, girl a bit more so; or are appearances deceptive?

A lovely, clear sound that could only be West Coast City is all over this promising debut. Their guitars sound delicious on ‘Deathwish’ and so, so damn sad on ‘Heaven Pt. 2’. I’ll mention another song (and band): this time, on ‘LRP’, there’s more than a hint of Pavement. That said, the Rose Dorn sound is still gestating, developing and finding its feet; I’m confident there are plenty more decent tunes a-comin’. We'll consider this space watched, fair enough?
