Whitney return with their new album, Forever Turned Around. It is the follow-up to their 2016 debut Light Upon The Lake. The Chicago duo play a brand of indie-fied soulful country. Forever Turned Around was produced by Bradley Cook and Jonathan Rado, who, with credits between them such as Hand Habits, Father John Misty, Weyes Blood and Hiss Golden Messenger, were able to add the perfect colours and textures.

Whitney return with their second album 'Forever Turned Around'. It's smooth indie-folk with dead soulful vocals and a smattering of well-placed trumpet and sax parts. There's an immediacy in the songwriting that smacks of the classic '60s soul that the band have clearly been influenced by.

The singing is a highlight of 'Forever Turned Around', sharing that countertenor range that Neil Young uses to great effect. This lends a real melancholy to the delivery that suits the album's languid arrangements. Although it's a pretty downtempo record it shares the intensity of an album like 'On The Beach' that belies its smooth production, pitter-patter percussion, and mellifluous instrumentation with emotionally charged intensity. It's a tricky alchemy to pull off, the ostensibly conventional songs that have an ocean of melancholy just beneath the surface, but Whitney pull it off with panache.

I feel like 'Forever Turned Around' is an album that, while not being immediately enjoyable, could gradually exert an iron grip over you.
