Fionn Regan is an Irish singer-songwriter who returns with 'Cala', his sixth album in a nineteen-year career that has seen him nominated for the Mercury Prize and sampled by Bon Iver. 'Cala' is a collection of ten modern folk songs that are grounded in Regan's fingerpicked guitar and emotive vocals, but bolstered by ambient swells, peripheral electronics, and the occasional thump of a kick drum.
There are some magical moments on this album. 'The Ocean Wave' is a highlight, with its glitchy electronic percussion, skeletal guitar lines, and flashes of treated piano and synthesizer. 'Cala' follows in this vein of folk music accompanied by ambient and IDM flavours which is a fantastic pairing. It's for this reason that the straight folk songs like 'Collar of Fur' don't have the same punch as 'The Ocean Wave', 'Cala', and 'Under The Waves / Tokyo' which are far more complex and nuanced.
It would be good to hear Regan explore the worlds of IDM, electronica, and glitch more because he clearly has a talent of marrying disparate genres with folk. Less Molly Mason more Mouse On Mars.
