Benjamin Power returns one more time as Blanck Mass with the enticingly titled Animated Violence Mild. Since making the switch from dense ambience to something more industrial after the Fuck Buttons man's solo debut, each subsequent record has gotten more noisy, more intense, and more catchy, all at the same time. Animated Violence Mild is no different, with Power reaching for sound as varied as black metal, hardcore, and europop.

Mmm, you know when an album is going to be good before you've even heard it? This was definitely the case with Blanck Mass' new album 'Animated Violence Mild'. Everything from the organic decay rendered electronically on the sleeve, to its press release stating that the album would discuss the "serpent of consumerism", and Blanck Mass himself writing that "the level of articulation in these tracks surpasses anything I have utilized before", whet my appetite. I was not disappointed.

'Animate Violence Mild' is a wild, cinematic, ridiculous album. It sounds futuristic and terrifying, dense and uncompromising.  I also love how there are lots of reasons to dislike this album (which is the same with a lot of great albums). It's so bombastic to the point of being overblown, grand to the point of being pompous (again, more qualities that great albums have) but there's something so refreshing about an album that is willing to go overboard on every single track. There's no messing about with slower numbers and Blanck Mass isn't getting the acoustic out for the last few songs, it's a forty-three minute sucker punch, an eight song-long medicine, audio acclimatisation.

Although terrifyingly powerful music exploring themes of corruption and late-capitalist greed is not something we necessarily want to be hearing these days, it's essential that we do because it remedies and heals. 'Animated Violence Mild' is a big spoon of cod liver oil, a breath of fresh air, an early morning swim: imbibe it.
