Dire Wolves are led by Jeffrey Alexander, who, among other projects has been a member of Jackie-O Motherfucker and run the label, Secret Eye Records. Dire Wolves have a slew of releases behind them, although, Grow toward The Light, is only their 4th full-length album. Expect spacey jams for the laid back.

I’ve been fighting dire wolves in a video game recently. They’re like regular wolves, but you know, dire. They’re bigger and stronger and whiter. This doesn’t have much to do with Grow Towards The Light by Dire Wolves but I thought I should divulge any baggage I have up front.
I’m not sure if there’s a regular Wolves the six-piece are more dire than but what I do know is they’ve produced an album of pleasant sunshiny jams. Because of their name I was expecting something much more aggressively psychedelic, but instead it’s sparse and patient and features soothing swathes of violin and saxophone. The tracks are mostly built on the band’s rock solid rhythm section, giving the more melodic instruments the space to have some fun. Singer Georgia Carbone is probably having the most fun though, as she sings in a made up language with all the joy and expression that Damo Suzuki can elicit at his best.
‘Discordant Angel’s (which I feel must actually be a cover of ‘House of the Rising Sun’? Am I crazy?) sees the band in a contemplative mood. Here Arjun Mendiratta’s violin takes centre stage, creating the kind of drone Tony Conrad was so masterful and producing. This effect is used even more effectively on ‘Water Bearing One’ which drops the groove entirely for something more spacey and wistful. The variety on offer here is genuinely impressive.
All in all, if Dire Wolves the band were in a video game I was playing, I’d want them to join my party.
