Mike Skinner, Jimothy Lacoste and The Pet Shop Boys walk into a suburban chain pub. They get the drinks in (lager for Skinner, mineral water for Jimothy, G & Ts for the PSB), break open a few packets of salt and vinegar on the table, and connect a portable Bluetooth speaker to an iPhone. Each present spends a few minutes punching in beats, noodling away at chord progressions or humming little tunes into the built-in speaker. After a couple of hours and a few more jars they’ve come up with something. It’s observant and outsiderish, a particularly British take on synthetic pop. It’s pretty good too - unpolished, but there’s definitely something there.
Then they pretend to be two blokes called Joey and Rowan, call themselves The Rhythm Method and get Moshi Moshi to put out the tracks as an LP called How Would You Know I Was Lonely?.
