Produced by The 2 Bears’ Raf Rundell, Men of the Moment is the second studio album from Warrington-based indie-pop act Man & The Echo. Examining populism and the state of the country in 2019 but avoiding the pitfalls of cliche, it juxtaposes upbeat textures with tales of struggle and desperation. The press release mentions Brexit and Trump.

7/10 Will Staff review, 01 August 2019

Man & The Echo are a Warrington-based indie-pop outfit making tight pop songs with socially conscious lyrics and groovy grooves. On their second album 'Men Of The Moment', we find the band in fine fettle. Part of the reason for this is the addition of Raf Rundell on production duties. He's brought some swagger to proceedings and I love the dance music flavours you get on this album, like the occasional blasts of glistening synths and drum machines.

This band is like a modern, indie-electro version of Madness. If that doesn't fickle your tancy then I don't know what will. Every song is really tightly crafted and has a steady drum and bass groove over which singer Gaz can hoot and caterwaul. His lyrics are slightly surreal and very funny, covering everything from "pub grub" to "dilapidated" train stations. He's got that marvellous knack that Jarvis Cocker has for singing funny, slightly dumb lyrics completely seriously.

For all the whimsy, there are gorgeous melodies and heartfelt moments. This album easily could have been twee and a little annoying, but it avoids that though great songwriting, superb production, and insightful, funny lyrics.
