Gazing Globe by Outer Spaces

Born out of a need to move on with her life following the disintegration of a long-term relationship, Cara Beth Satalino’s new Outer Spaces album Gazing Globe puts up a defiant front of bold, melodic indie-pop tunes reminiscent of early R.E.M. It's the old trick of music as therapy, the positive trappings soundtracking her recovery process.

Well, I didn't really want to be negative about this album. The press release states that Outer Space's lynchpin Cara Beth Satalino had some personal problems and one of the ways (as well as meditation) she coped with them was the writing of this album. I hope she's doing okay, but this album really is quite boring. I can't tell you how many versions of 'Gazing Globe' I've heard from indie bands across the spectrum. There's a few chuggy Modern Lovers ones, a couple of stripped back ones, a catchy one, a ballad-y one, and all played with the same guitar sounds, drum sounds, bass sounds.

There's nothing particularly bad about this album, it's not bad in the same way that Pete Doherty's new album is bad (twee), or bad in the same way that the Strokes debut album is bad (rage-inducing, whiny), it's just a bit boring. There's nothing that exciting or new or appealing on this record. All the edges have been sanded off, it's just average, there's nothing daring. People have fought for your right to party, so party!!!
