The Gold & Silver Sessions by Elder

One of the most eyebrow-raising musical evolutions in recent times, it’s incredible to think that the expansive, krautrock wig-outs of The Gold & Silver Sessions are the product of Elder, the same band that released the straightforwardly stoner-rock Reflections of a Floating World just two years back.

I’m a very great fan of Elder which is a good start but I would love this record if I didn’t know who had made it. Truthfully you would not expect it to be by the same band that made 'Lore' or 'Omens'.

Three instrumental tracks that are thoroughly chilled but with a motorik pulse and an overlay of improvisation doesn’t on the face of it sound too essential. But on the first and third tracks especially, where the full band stretch out, there’s a sense of adventure and accomplished interplay. It's a terrific mashup of structure and freedom with some genuinely thrilling twists and turns.

Krautrock is too much of a cliché to be an adequate description but if you like Elder and want to know what it would sound like if they really were playing at your place then buy this record.
