Snaxx by Mndsgn

Not to be confused with 2018’s Snax - note the extra ‘x’ - Snaxx is a new beat-tape from popular dude Mndsgn. Snaxx is actually the Snax sequel, so if you got a whiff of the previous LP you’ll know what to expect here. This is a set of breezy, funky hip-hop and neo-soul that draws equally from the Chill Vibes (tm) of Homeshake and the Brainfeeder beat style. Oh, and it’s pronounced ‘mind design’ by the way.

Snaxx is the follow up to Mndsgn's previous album Snax but this time there's one more 'x' to contend with so do be careful when buying ok? Otherwise it's everything you'd have hoped for if you bought Snax which is basically a West Coast beats tape for use when the soft top is down. These tapes seem to fit in between Mndsgn's regular LPs which feature more vocal based material and conventional song structures. Snaxx instead is mostly instrumental and made up of lots of cool mini instrumental jamz that owe something to those made by the likes of Madlib.

Where 2016s Body Wash was lush and full, this is a a more lo-fi type of sound but an equally gorgeous listen. The ramshackle nature of it actually works in its favour  - the tracks are brief, always catchy and don't fall into the over-elaborating trap that makes recent releases by the likes of Thundercat so cumbersome. It's not overly dissimilar to the recent Mahatma X album in the way that tracks drift into each other and overlap.

Perfect if you like your beat tapes. Summer '19 listening sorted.
