Everyone knows that the best, most gnarliest psychedelic-rock comes from Japan: accept no imitations. So the arrival of Osaka trio Hibushibire’s second album Turn On, Tune In, Freak Out! is a cause for celebration, especially with Makoto Kawabata himself manning the production desk! Vivid, guitar-driven freakouts, with three tracks on side one and one big monster on side two.

Lame album title aside, ‘Turn On, Tune In, Freak Out’ by Hiboshibire is a hench album. Combining the holy influences of Sabbath, Aphrodite’s Child, and Hendrix, this new effort from the Japanese group is a heavy slap of heavy metal-tinged psych rock. Don’t get me wrong, you’ve got to be in the right mood for monster riffage, guitars squeals louder than on my uncle Lee’s pig farm when it’s slaughter day, and a seventeen-minute album closer called ‘Rollercoaster Of The Universe’.

This is an album for racing down the M62 to (at the requisite speed limit). Just set aside thirty-five minutes, get stuck into a chunky joss stick and a few drops of Patchouli oil, and get loose. I suppose there’s nothing wrong with a heavily-retro album when it’s this fun. You're missing the point if you point out the similarities with other works. It’s just loud, fuzzy, a bit angry, and doesn’t take itself too seriously - great stuff!
