Former Fat White Family member and co-founder Dan Lyons continues his solo career with his first EP Special People, a five-track collection containing last year’s single ‘Gargoyle’ and the blistering title track that righteously skewers the shallowness of celebrity culture in 2019.

Nah, not really sure about this EP from Dan Lyons. He’s perhaps best known for being a founding member of Fat White Family and playing on their incendiary first record ‘Champagne Holocaust’. I suppose it was this fact that got me a little bit excited for this EP but sadly I was pretty disappointed.
It’s a fairly run of the mill collection of semi-grungey rock and roll tunes. There’s even a cover of the Velvets’ ‘Waiting For The Man’, a song which did not need to be covered, especially in a way that is so far removed from the spirit of the original. If you’re going to attempt to cover those most perfect of perfect songs then try and rework it completely, as Medicine 8 did with ‘Murder Mystery’. I don’t want to be a negative Nancy but I have to say what I really feel, and that is that this EP is just a little tepid. Everything just so middle of the road, same guitar noises, same drum sound, same lyrical themes. Dan, pull your finger out, mate.
