Pianoworks is one of those things that belies a deeply depressing message, the loss of childhood wonder and joy, with deeply beautiful and moving music. It is an album that was apparently 'recorded, re-recorded, and re-re-recorded in the span of nearly a decade', in Eluvium's quest for the perfect sound. Opener 'Recital' is meant to mimic just that, the recital of a piece of music. It does so in such a way that conveys the adherence to form and technique, but never loses a sense of magic from the simple act of playing piano. It is, as the press release states, 'uncomplicated as it is uncompromised'.

Earlier this year I got really into a recording of Glenn Gould performing the Goldberg Variations. I haven’t spent a lot of time listening to solo piano music, and through my early listens the thing that struck me most was how intimate it felt. Of course, I’ve listened to other kinds of solo performances, but something about the image of Gould, hunched over a piano alone, really resonated with me. We don’t sell a lot of music like that here, which is something of a shame. So I’m grateful for Eluvium, who’s career has predominantly been marked by drone and ambience, has returned to the piano with Pianoworks.

Part of Eluvium’s motivations for doing so were nostalgia. Piano lessons and practice are a presence in many children’s lives, as they were for him. And so the music carries are pained yearning for what’s been lost. His compositions are simple, probably simple enough a child could learn them. He rarely strays too far up or down the octaves, preferring to stay around middle-C, close to home. They’re slow, and quietly beautiful in a way that avoids the emotional excess that is found in the works of some his piano playing peers.

The recording is utterly magnificent, and enable Eluvium to show off the skills he has long practice in creating and destroying space. The piano notes ring out individually, with great clarity and charm. But as well as the usual formats, Pianoworks is also available as sheet music. And part of me thinks, maybe that's the way to listen to this album. What can be more intimate than playing the album yourself?
