Time Released Sound are releasing the soundtrack for the recent Icelandic film 'Sumarbörn' composed by Kira Kira and Hermigervill. A film that plays with the tension between the real and the imagined, the music very much follows suit in the way that its both playful and dramatic but always beautiful. Imagine a more ethereal Twin Peaks soundtrack and you're halfway there.

Kira Kira and Hermigervill have joined forces on the soundtrack to 'Summer Children', a Norweigian film about children uprooted and sent to the country. It's a film that deals with the interplay of fantasy and reality. This contrast is also evidenced in the music, which contains lots of 'natural' instruments like harmonium and vibraphone that work with synthesizers to create a music that is neither concrete (in the traditional sense of the word...) or definite.
This soundtrack is really lovely. There are gossamer-light melodies, plenty of ambient swells, strange alien noises, and occasional cracked percussion. The soundtrack manages to convey the uncertainty and mystery of childhood. It's glacially slow in places but also has plenty of fast, skittering noises like birdsong. Though incredibly calming, it can also be slightly eerie at the same time. It's this liminality which I love so much.
In short, the 'Summer Children' soundtrack has made me really want to watch the film now, which is I suppose the best praise I can bestow upon it.
