Osaka based Atsushi Izumi knows how to channel his background in sound design into creating truly potent and destructive techno. Just as capable of using drawn out synths to create tension, as he is in using noisy, fractured drums to detonate said tension. Verdigris EP is pain and pleasure and released by Thrènes Records.

Our man Phil forwarded me a promo of this with a “I reckon you’ll be into this” proviso. Glad he did as it may well have slipped under the radar, as I wasn’t familiar with the work of Osaka producer Atsushi Izumi - whom apparently has roots in drum & bass. It’s a pretty tasty 5-track EP which fits somewhere in the realms of ominous bass music ala Pessimist, Scorn/Fret etc.
These tracks have some serious weight when cranked up to optimum level and there are some sharp sound design skills on display. I dropped a couple of tracks from this while DJing this past weekend, namely the quivering sci-fi lost in space, dark matter transmission ‘Inimicus’ and the more stomping but equally hovering in some dark void vibes of the appropriately titled ‘Vacuum’. Those two are the ones to head straight for, but the ANFS remix of ‘Zeit’ is also a quality slab of cavernous stepping techno like a herd of elephants winding down at the rave. Useful clobber on Swiss imprint Thrènes Records.
