For those who haven't heard of Fire! Orchestra what you need to do is imagine a big band willing to channel all its resources into one thing: weight. Their previously resources have been heftier than most most metal releases, and though they've trimmed down from 28 to 14 members for Arrival it doesn't make them any less potent. Sublime in the way that music so rarely is. On Rune Grammofon.

Oof! Fire Orchestra are a 14-piece (they used to be a 28 piece...) free-jazz, avant-garde, experimental outfit that make music that is just massive. The scope of 'Arrival' is huge. There are too many elements to put into words and the structures are mostly too hard to adequately relay. What endeared them to me most, however, was their cover of the sublime Robbie Basho song 'Blue Crystal Fire' (a must-listen). Using a myriad of timbres, tones, and textures, Fire! Orchestra have created something unique.
Some parts remind me of Can, some recall early Bad Seeds, there are all sorts of meaty drones and aggressive string squeals, I hear delicate melodies submerged in the chaos, and small but scintillating elements like the horn players' breaths on 'Blue Crystal Fire' (the best piece on this album). To be honest I could write a whole review of their Basho cover because it really is that good, and although the album never reaches those heights again this is still a superb, gargantuan, beautiful record.
