LA’s Froth are back after two years away with their fourth album, Duress. Two years is hardly a long time to be away, but we're glad they're back. The album addresses such hot issues as the Yanny/Laurel debate. Their off-kilter shoegaze, psych, post-punk, slacker sound is all in check, which is the main thing, like. On Wichita.

7/10 Clinton Staff review, 23 May 2019

I really liked that Froth record that came out a couple of years ago. Outside (Briefly) not only neatly described the story of my summer lunch experiences but was an album which veered wonderfully between kraut-pop and gorgeous acoustic balladry a la Elliott Smith or someone. This new one Duress continues the fuzzed up boxy sound they had down pat on Outside (Briefly) with some heartfelt lo-fi sighs such as 'Catalogue' where super soft words are breathed over clanking guitars as the whole thing moves at snail's pace. They are very fond of those George Harrison style bendy lead guitar licks which straddle atop their carefully considered songs.

At times they come across as Women (the band) playing the Grandaddy back catalogue. They aren't in a rush to get anywhere because they have guitars to tangle together - the sound kind of reaches its apex on 'A2' which chucks dual guitars together (one in each ear natch). Then they happily come up with something supremely melodic in 'Department Head' and you wonder why they can't do this all the time.

The reason being seems to be that Froth's sound is so loose and relies on things coming together naturally. It doesn't always happen but I do like this band a lot  - they have plenty of ideas and regularly deliver the lo-fi goods.
