Olden Yolk hit us square in the eye with their self titled debut last year. Some lovely watery sounds there.. I'm talking the Feelies and early Yo La Tengo you know. So all is set for their second album proper which has seen the former Quilt duo relocate to sunny Los Angeles where the warm day vibes with hopefully infiltrate their guitar pop sound.

Who wouldn't want to move to L.A? If I got the chance I'd go tomorrow. Screw you lot. I'd be sitting on a veranda sipping something tropical before you know it. Formerly of New York duo Olden Yolk have just recently moved to L.A so that's nice for them. Therefore they've made their most laid back and stress-free record yet which, until the third track Cotton and Cane, was threatening to to perhaps get swallowed up too much in LA good time vibes. But Cotton & Cane is a stonker  - even living up to its Antipodean near namesake. A fantastically sprightly piece of guitar pop that lollops along like someone in a rush to get somewhere sunny. What a great track.

Otherwise we have an album of warm vibes, cool seas...(reminds me of Leeds). Their sound has definitely undergone a sun tan since their earlier self titled record which was more I guess in a sinewy New Jersey Water Music thing. Castor & Pollox takes those Beach Boys plodding piano chords on a ballad that is lovely before it gets hopelessly lost about half way through.

A nice album but one which (like their debut) is overshadowed by one great song. It reminds me a lot of the band Joyzipper if you remember them (Phil will), kinda surfy songs, male/female vocals and the feel of something made by people enjoying a nice life.
