All-American singer-songwriter Josh Ritter has teamed up with Jason Isbell for new LP Fever Breaks. The Idaho native’s tenth LP is a record of countrified Americana - or is it Americana-fied country? - with designs on the big leagues. Sounds expensive either way. Fever Breaks is one for the Springsteen fanatic in all of us.

Fever Breaks by Josh Ritter

7/10 Will 25 April 2019

‘Fever Breaks’ by Josh Ritter is made up of ten sun-dappled Americana tracks straight from the heartlands. It’s strange, it’s really a lottery whether something so clearly derivative appeals to me or not. With ‘Fever Breaks’ it 100% does. It’s big-hearted with just the right amount of mawkishness. The obvious hallmarks of classic Americana are all there: the meandering, sprawling grooves putting you in mind of canyons and plains, the gentle melancholy, and the interplay of self and environment such as ‘Ground Don’t Want Me’ and ‘On the Water’.

I just love how someone in 2019 can unashamedly call a song ‘Blazing Highway Home’. I don’t know whether it’s a sly joke or not, either way it’s brilliant. It’s pretty obvious what comparisons I’m going to draw: hints of Johnny Cash, more than a hint of Neil Young, I also get the sense that John Ritter has listened to Grant Lee Buffalo and perhaps Grant Lee Philips’s later, more country-inspired work. There’s also the soulfulness of Bruce Springsteen.

Fair play to Josh Ritter for not caring about accusations of mawkishness or being hackneyed; I enjoyed ‘Fever Breaks’ and I encourage you to listen to it.
