Rough Trade front the debut LP from PicaPica. As it was with the group’s 2017 EP Spring And Shade, so it is again on Together & Apart. The harmonised vocals of Josienne Clarke and Samantha Whates take centre-stage here, and the interplay between them has shades of Camera Obscura as well as American folk artists like Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss. Instrumentals on Together & Apart range from gentle acoustic strums to retro singer-songwriter rock.

Everything is 'Pi...' today. We've had Pixx already.. now it's PicaPica's turn. The UK duo open with a kind of opening harmonic exploration which is getting right on my wick I have to admit so I've skipped forward to 'On the Wing' which is lovely. You want to be hearing these picked acoustic guitars - they sound like sunlight dappling on a mountain lake.
Josienne Clarke and Samantha Whates have similar but not identical voices that spiral and spin round each other. Sometimes they sing close harmonies at other times they sing rounds and it's obvious their voices work together like...oh I don't know...fish and chips, bread and butter, Cannon and Ball. The light guitar funk of 'Cast In Stone' is less impressive than their more rustic offerings such as 'Sucker Punch' which has something of Out Of Time era R.E.M. in its acoustic lushness.
There's nice stuff here but it's hard to see what has got Rough Trade so hot under the collar about it. I presume they think they have just signed the next First Aid Kit so this will appeal to anyone who likes winsome folk and people singing together.
