Drums? Tick. Bass? Tick. Reverby vocals? Tick. Yes yes, looks like we've got ourselves a classic case of the no-waves. Nots are now a three piece, having shed a synth player since their last record. This makes an incredibly cold record, one that is anchored by its rhythms and liberated by its lyricism. On Upset The Rhythm

Nots are a three-piece post-punk band from Memphis, Tennesee. They’re releasing their third record, suitably named ‘3’. It’s a wholly aggressive record with punk song structures and shouted vocals that rattles along at breakneck speed. I love the muddiness and the grime of the recordings, everything is submerged slightly in this kind of gooeyness. If there wasn’t this gently lo-fi quality, then the record would definitely suffer.

Third track ‘Floating Hands’ is when I thought ‘hang on, there’s something alright going on here’. The first tracks are pleasant enough but conform to classic noise rock a la Sonic Youth or even The Damned. ‘Floating Hands’ has different noises, more interesting noises, better noises. It sounds a little bit like Parquet Courts fronted by Lydia Lunch.

This record is great in parts, when Nots do their own thing but on a few songs they just trot out songs sounding similar to records made years ago by bands like Sonic Youth or Bikini Kill. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy this record, however, and think songs such as ‘Floating Hands’ and ‘In Glass’ display a group that certainly have a better record in them.
