Anthoney Hart (East Man, Imaginary Forces) returns to the prestigious Planet Mu label under his Basic Rhythm alias after a short absence, with On The Threshold. A collection that promises to be a treat for DJs, it sprawls from drum’n’bass to jungle and hardcore on a thread of thoughtfulness and experimentalism.

Scattering, syncopated beats. Detuned synths. A proliferation of foundations-rattling low end frequencies. Evocative bleeps and rave samples. Check, check, check and check. Anthoney J Hart is back, this time in his Basic Rhythm guise for his fourth LP in as many years and his second record for the always interesting Planet Mu. This follows on from his East Man grime leanings on last year’s impressive ‘Red, White & Zero’ LP.
Second track in, ‘Yeah, I Like It’ has some seriously bassy business going on; some sonic rumblings here call to mind LFO’s early-nineties classic ‘Frequencies’. Also features a very familiar, initially hard-to-place female soul-vocal sample. Took me a minute or two to connect Aretha Franklin’s “Ooh, boooooo-oooy” snippet from a classic ‘80s pop hit. Hart continues to draw upon the colourful, checkered past of British dance-music culture, yet with an eye on the present (and the dancefloor); the stereo-panning effects are sitting nicely on the ears, so headphone listening is a pleasing experience
‘I Want You’ features a sample from a soulful house classic (this one is maddening to name though, it’s on the tip of my tongue… aaaargh! Answers on a postcard please). Those detuned synth stabs are addictive, especially when complemented here with crunchy beats and deep bass kicks. ‘Edge of Darkness’ is a lot more, well, fierce. Claustrophobic, walls-closing-in pummeling bass and skittering drums. ‘The Kru’ screams urban grime of the duttiest variation and ‘Fi Di Gyal’ brings the pounding kicks and a cacophony of claps. One to bump in my ride home skirting South Central Leeds perhaps.
