After a run of hype-building EPs throughout 2017 and 2018, 2019 sees LA producer Principleasure drop his debut LP. I is a collection of techno that also incorporates elements of 2-step, blog house, vaporwave and Italo Disco. Moments like ‘Hexagonal Dab’ verge on industrial but steer away through clean production and chunky melodies. It’s no surprise to hear that Dixon and AME dig Principleasure’s I.

After Resident Advisor stopped doing their user voted DJ of the year list I was worried I would never see the name Dixon again. The German house and techno DJ managed was voted number one every year between 2013 and the last one in 2016. I was heartbroken that it could never happen again.

But it turns out he’s still about, and still carries enough cultural cache that he got a mention in the press release for Principleasure’s debut album ,’I’. And in a lot of ways that’s very apt. Dixon getting voted best DJ in the world 4 times in a row would have been impossible without the internet, much like this record. And I’m not just saying that because it has song titles with the words “dab” and “twerk” in them. Though it is partly that.

The eleven tracks here are for the most part electro flavoured techno tracks. Their well produced in the way you’d expect from someone whose day job involves designing sample packs. Everything glistens and glows and if it doesn’t that’s only because it’s not supposed to as on the bitey ‘Nix’. This pristineness brings to mind the sort of electroclash-y sound that turned into bloghouse, the internet's own dance genre. And the arpeggios on ‘Ecdo’ and ‘Flux Jab’ would fit very happily into current web trend of 80s sounding synth music.

Honestly though, as shiny as it is, it’s all a bit calculated for my tastes. Nothing here is bad (how could it be), but it never really thrills.
